Hi! I'm Charlotte

Welcome to my research blog for Global Postcolonial Fashion using India as a case study to explore the themes of postcolonial identity and resistance.

Why is it important to research this topic?

In a postcolonial society that views Western culture as hegemonic, it is important to research the differing experiences of the colonised because imperial domination tried to suppress their cultural identities for many years.

Fashion is a significant factor to study as it can symbolise the postcolonial identity of different cultures and the resistance that they are trying to show against Western domination since claiming independence.

In India specifically, we can see a pattern of their cultural clothing symbolising their freedom from colonial rule and desire to bring back cultural traditions that were popular pre-colonisation such as handloom textiles. This research will also explore women's clothing specifically because the situation is more complex when misogyny and rape myths complicate women's ability to authentically represent their postcolonial identities in a modern, consumerist society.
